The idea of layering garments while engaging with a sport such as cycling might sound counterintuitive. But ask anyone who performs at a higher level and they’ll tell you that base layering is one of the best ways to maximise performance. Cycling is a fantastic way to give yourself not only a muscular vascular workout but also to get outdoors into the elements. It’s important, then, to not only make sure that the body is kept protected from the weather but the temperature is regulated as it warms up from exertion.

Finding the right style

Cycling requires the most effort from the legs, so choosing performance underwear that offers both support and prevents friction due to movement is important.

Longer, thigh-length, form-fitting underwear is ideal to wear under your cycling suit for extra protection. A lightweight, flexible material, such as that which Merino wool offers, will provide extra comfort while the natural elasticity will prevent feeling like you’ve added restriction to movement. Similarly, ultrafine Merino wool vests, or singlets, will transfer moisture vapour from your body and aid in evaporation, cooling you down.

Why Merino wool

There are many reasons why Merino wool is one of the best fabrics but the primary reasons as a base layer are comfort, breathability and its odour resistance qualities. Merino wool garments are amongst the softest in the world, and base layers made from the ultrafine fibres are so light as to be almost unnoticeable while wearing.

The high breathability of Merino wool means that it will regulate your temperature – helping keep you cool as you warm up, or help maintain heat in the cold.

Cycling, particularly in summer, is a sweat-producing sport, and unlike synthetics, Merino wool is resistant to odours. Merino wool absorbs and ‘locks away’ the odour molecules from sweat, which are only released upon washing.
