Don’t be so doubtful when reading this heading – woollen socks and sandals are happening. So pop on a pair, push them down and put your best foot forward.

Walk the walk

Thank you, to the runways of menswear fashion, unsuspectingly stylish tourists and other proponents of footwear comfort; the socks and sandals combo has been percolating in fashion’s upper spheres for some time now. Haven’t jumped feet first into this particular trend yet? No need to fret – there’s still time.

As a game-changing stylist’s trick and a personal favourite of designer Miuccia Prada, the trend is made for experimentation. With a variety of combinations, a seemingly minor addition can add a distinctively quirky and individual air to your pre-existing look. But this isn’t the time to pull out your ordinary white ankle socks. Texture is key when it comes to pulling off this look with aplomb.

Pay attention to hemlines, too; the longer the skirt lengths, the shorter the sock – you need to be able to see where the socks ends, lest they look like tights and the effect and entire point is ruined. At Rochas, Alessandro Dell’Acqua offset sporty ribbed socks with over-embellished mules and for the street style set, wearing black socks with Birkenstocks was a cooler alternative to the heel. (A heel is too easy – socks and flats shows that you really know what you’re doing.)

And finally, the sock/sandal partnership offers up a practical argument for combining the two: the transformation of the summer slide into winter-appropriate footwear. Because sometimes fashion thinks about function, too. Tick, tick, tick.
